About Spencer Douglas

Name: Spencer Douglas
Major: Building Construction Management
Grad Year: 2012
Hometown: Indianapolis
Activities/Organizations: National Association of Home Builders Purdue Student Chapter (NAHB) President, College of Technology Student Ambassador, Sigma Lambda Chi Honor Construction Society, Habitat for Humanity volunteer, basketball, ultimate frisbee, hanging with friends, meeting new people, etc.
Favorite place at Purdue: My favorite place is the student union where I spend a lot of time between classes studying, grabbing a quick bite to eat or drink, or catching a quick nap. The union offers everything a student needs to get through the day.
What is Technology? Technology, to me, is the use of any tool or system to make life more efficient, practical, and essential.
Why I chose my major: I knew early on in high school I wanted to do something hands-on in the construction industry. After researching local schools and programs, I knew Building Construction Management was for me. We spend a lot of time in labs using technology to learn about roles and practices of construction managers.

Bio

Hello to all my future and current Boilermakers! My name is Spencer and I’m a senior in the College of Technology studying Building Construction Management with a specialization in Residential Construction Management. I’m from the southeast side of Indianapolis where I attended Franklin Central High School. Purdue isn’t too far away from home that I can’t visit, and I can get the feeling of freedom that every college student looks for.
I want to start off by telling you a little about my experiences at Purdue. In my opinion getting involved early in your college life with a job, student organizations, sports, or other activities is the key to success in college. Purdue and the College of Technology offer a wide variety of options when looking to get involved. As a freshmen and sophomore I worked at Ford Dining Court, one of the dining services locations that Purdue offers students. At Ford I met a ton of new people from all different majors and after my first semester I made a lot of new friends, and I knew that Purdue was the right choice for me.
Being involved is something I love to do, and, while it keeps me very busy, I love meeting all the new people and making new connections. I’ve been treasurer of the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) for two years, and this coming year I’ll be the president. I’m also a College of Technology Student Ambassador where I give tours of the college to prospective students. I’ve participated in student competitions within my major for two years now, and I’m currently working on the Purdue Solar Decathlon house which you’ll hear more about in upcoming blogs. I’ve also volunteered with Habitat for Humanity on a couple of Purdue builds including Hammering with Hope. Getting involved in all these organizations is so much fun and has helped me meet a lot of new people. Hopefully one of them will lead to a job come May when I graduate!
The College of Technology has been everything I hoped for and more. I look forward to writing about more of my experiences during my senior year. I’ll leave you with a piece of advice: get out there and get involved early, make new friends and your time here will be the best time of your life!
